Set up tax rules and templates for a New Zealand company

Use the Company form to create the standard New Zealand GST setup before you use tax templates on transactions. The action creates three tax categories, four sales tax templates, four purchase tax templates, six item tax templates, and six tax rules. It uses a suitable existing tax account or creates a GST account.

Before you start

  • Save the Company with Country set to New Zealand.

  • Set Default Cost Center on the Company form.

  • Make sure you have permission to edit the Company.

Create and review the setup

  1. Open the saved Company.

  2. Select Manage > Create NZ Tax Rules and Templates. Wait for the result message.

  3. Review the counts of records created, existing records skipped, and errors. If the message lists errors, resolve them before you use the affected templates.

  4. Check the new Tax Category, Sales Taxes and Charges Template, Purchase Taxes and Charges Template, Item Tax Template, and Tax Rule records for this company. Check the GST account in Chart of Accounts.

  5. Before you submit a transaction, confirm that its tax template and calculated GST match the intended treatment. The New Zealand GST Report explains the tax codes used in reporting.

You can run the action again to fill gaps. Existing matching records are skipped. If the button is absent, confirm that the Company is saved, Country is New Zealand, and you have permission to edit it.
